3 Box Motions
The box motion is an accessory to those power looms adapted for: the purpose of weaving cloths in which more than one colour or kind of weft is used. There are two classes of motions adopted, namely the circular box motion and the rising or drop box motion. The main feature of difference between the two styles is in the method of carrying the shuttles. The circular method has the shuttles arranged in series of cells revolving round a common axis. In the other style the boxes are arranged in shelf form, one above the other. -

8 Architecture
Portugal maintains an important architectural legacy from a long history of contact with invaders and other visitors who brought architectural ideas from Western Europe and North Africa. Among the migrants were Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Germanic peoples, and Arabs, as well as visitors from France, Italy, Holland, Germany, Spain, and Great Britain.Architecture in Portugal has been influenced by the broad Western architectural styles, including Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Neoclassicism. Two Portuguese architectural styles are unique, the Manueline architectural style and the Pombaline, named after the dictator the Marquis of Pombal. Pre-Roman-esque styles include early Megalithic structures, Roman styles, and Moorish or Arab styles, when Portugal was occupied by Muslims (711-1290). This period of Moorish castles and mosques, most but not all of which were razed, was followed by the Romanesque period (1100-ca. 1230), when many churches, monasteries, castles, and palaces were constructed. There followed the Gothic period (ca. 1200-1450), which was dominated by buildings for the Church, the monarchy, and the nobility. Related to Portugal's overseas empire, the kingdom's new role briefly as a world power, especially on the seas, and to the reign of King Manuel I, is the Manueline architectural style, described by scholars as "Atlantic Baroque" (ca. 1490-1520), a bold Portuguese version of late Gothic style. This was followed by styles of Renaissance and Mannerism (ca. 1520-1650), including the "Plain style," which was influenced by Castilian styles under King Felipe I.Following the period 1580 to 1640, when Spain ruled Portugal, there was restoration architecture (1640-1717) and then the Baroque style (1717-55). The largest and most unusual building from this era, the Mafra Palace, is said to be even larger than Spain's El Escorial. Following the Lisbon Earthquake of 1755, was Pombaline style (1755-1860), a blend of late Baroque and Neoclassicism, which began when Pombal's government oversaw the reconstruction of large sections of central Lisbon. Modern architecture followed this period, a style influenced in the 20th century by one of Europe's best architecture schools, the so-called Escola do Porto (School of Oporto). This school is the Faculdade de Arquitectura (School of Architecture), and alumni include celebrated architects Fernando Tavora; Álvaro Siza Vieira, designer of the Portuguese pavilion at Expo '98, Lisbon; and Eduardo Souto de Moura. Despite tragic losses of historic structures due to urban development, since the 1930s many Portuguese governments have sought to preserve and restore the remaining historic legacy of architecture. -

13 Dhootie
Light-weight cloths of plain weave and used by the natives of India as loin cloths. The cheaper styles have a narrow coloured stripe near each selvedge and coloured cross stripes or headings; others have simply grey stripes, made by cramming ends in the reed. The better styles have fancy dobby borders of extra coloured warp threads and crammed cross stripes in the weft. Widths are about 25-in. to 54-in., lengths about 21/2 yards to 6 yards each, and the yams vary enormously. The variety in design and quality is continually altering - rayon and silk are being used for the borders and headings - jacquard effects are seen in the better qualities and especially where Egyptian yarns are used. Two qualities are as follows: - 42-in. wide, 64 ends 38's T., 60 picks 42's W., 24-shaft dobby borders; 40-in. wide, 76 ends 50's T., 76 picks 60's W., jacquard borders, all Egyptian. The left-hand illustration shows a two-colour border, and on the right a red dobby border. -
14 China Brocades
Two general styles are common for the China trade. The first includes various styles where colour and cords are used with brocade stripes in small effects. Made 29-in. wide, 100 X 84 per inch, 50E./40E. with 2/100's colour, 2/60's cords. The design illustrated gives a brocade style with a plain ground, made 29-in. wide, 100 X 74 per inch,;6's T./30's W., all Egyptian, combed weft. Both styles are bleached and finished in the usual China firm finish -

16 Crepe-De-Chine
A style of crepe, plain, figured or printed, exceedingly soft or drapy, woven with a fine silk warp, and open band and cross band tightly twisted worsted weft, which shrinks to a permanent crinkled effect when finished. A lustre is always visible owing to the fine silk warp. The weft is twisted the reverse way to the warp. Some crepe-de-Chines are made from ordinary hard-twisted warp, in these styles the weft used is usually two picks weft way, and two picks twist way spun. Also a plain weave all-silk fabric made from very fine yarns, about 26 to 30 denier. The warp is raw silk, ranging from 200 to 300 ends per inch, with 72 to 90 picks of hard-twist crepe weft. The weft is two right and two reverse. A 44-in. cloth will give 39/40-in. finished. Turns per inch in the weft range from 40 to 70. A cotton crepe-de-Chine is made 41-in. wide, 104 ends and 64 picks per inch, 2/80's T., 80's crepe weft. Its appearance and draping quality are much inferior to a silk crepe-de-Chine. -
